Guest Speaker: Jill Haislip, Brookdale Central Paradise Valley, featuring Leslie Fuller, MSW
Biography: Leslie Fuller MSW (Masters in Social Welfare with an emphasis in gerontology). I have been with Brookdale Senior Living for 10 years. My role is educator and coach in understanding what quality dementia care means and supporting our Brookdale standards which support this. We must help shed the old stereotypes of dementia and celebrate our residents as unique individuals who are still actively contributing to those around them. We help residents to have purpose, maintain a sense of self, stay connected with their family and community, and give life meaning. We support families as they find new ways to communicate with and support their loved ones.
Topic of presentation: The Alzheimer’s Caregiver Journey. Discuss the basics of how dementia affects the individual and those that love them. Address how communication skills and understanding can help everyone, and the importance of self-care for the caregiver.
